Fishing at "el Bajo", the Reef

Depart 6:30 AM - - - -  4 Hrs

The fishing trip to reef is intended for the fisherman more interested in quantity than trophies. "El Bajo", or "the Shallows" is a volcanic extension of Punta El Custodio that rises from the ocean floor about 1 Km offshore. Where the sandy shelf drops to 70 feet in between, at the reef the depth is 20-30 feet, and it one of the most active fishing spots along this coast.

The area is frequented by a variety of excellent fish, including sierra mackarel, red snapper, a variety of tuna, and the "toro" or jack.

Our boat, the Media Luna, will pick you up a short walk away from your villa, and Captain Armando will have you trolling over the reef in a matter of minutes.

The sunrise over the Sierra Madre is usually spectacular, and the morning will be cool with a slight offshore wind. At about 9:30, the wind will die and the sea will be totally still, and if visibility is good, you can see the reef below you. If you bring your snorkel, you can spend a bit of time among the fish outside the boat, rather than bringing them into the boat.

On your way home with the catch, and there had better be a catch, because we have yet to send out a party that got skunked, you can cruise a bit of the beautiful coastline and view Custodio from the water.

Once home, the cooks will have a breakfast ready and begin preparing the fish you brought back in a variety of ways, depending on your catch of the day. What a life!
