El Cora Waterfall
Depart 10 AM - - - - - 5 hrs
The sun is shining on the waterfall pools in
the early afternoon and arrival at 1:30 pm is just about perfect for sun/water
exposure. Driving time is about one hour to El Cora.
A party of eight is perfect for this
trip,
along with the guide, who will drive you to the trail head and then guide you
down the "arroyo" or canyon. It is a fairly steep 10 minute hike, not
too hard but there are places where there are ropes to help you in a high/low
step. It is well worth the decent to the pools and falls.
The waterfall is crystal clear descending
more than 300 feet into a deep pool with fresh clean water. The reward at the
end of the trail. Swimming is fantastic, the water is cold but refreshing and
perfect in the middle of the day when the sun shines right down into the pool.
There are actually 3 waterfalls here, and a
short walk along the creek takes you to the next pool and a smaller falls above.
A more difficult descent will take the intrepid to the final pool, which has a
rock ledge to dive from. Most are comfortable to sit by the first two pools,
swim and rest in a postcard tropical waterfall location where there are not a
100 tourists. Quiet and unforgettable.
The ascending trip up the arroyo is actually
easier than the descent. We just go slow and it is in the shade and very
beautiful. The car is parked at the top so by the time we have gotten warned up
from our swim in cold water, the air conditioned suburban awaits us. In it is
the famous cooler with ice and cold beer, pop, water, juice as well as luscious
sandwiches made with all the fresh foods of Mexico to get us home to the dinner
that awaits us.
